2012
Hey everyone. So this is our first blog post this year. 2012 has been great so far and is looking pretty good in the months ahead. We’ve gotten to play a couple fun shows so far. One of those shows was with our old friend Andrew from Meryll and Victor Villareal (of such bands as Cap’n Jazz and Ghosts and Vodka). We’ve been listening to Victor’s music for many years now so...

Mini Update
Hey, friends! We’ve been wanting to throw something up on this blog for awhile now, but we just haven’t had time to write anything substantial lately. Life is really, really good. We’ve been spending a lot of time with our wives and our church communities, focusing more energy on our Tuesday night meals with our homeless friends downtown, and just letting our spirits be...

His Faithfulness
This past year, I’ve experienced God’s faithfulness like I never have before. I’ve come to realize that I have not placed my complete trust in God until recently. I pray that we would all remember who it is we serve, our Maker, the Creator of the entire universe, the alpha and omega. To borrow from Jeremiah 32:17,”Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth...

We love what we do...
I just got done reading an update from The Ember Days, a band whom I have been listening to and following the past couple months. I am quite encouraged and excited to see their band progress and to see their ministry grow. They posted an awesome testimony from someone who attended one of their shows and what God did that night, as well as a very cool video from their recent 6 week tour. Check it...
forgiveness
Why am I up at 6:58 on a Saturday morning? Sickness. Coughing and drainage. But I do enjoy the peacefulness of early mornings and the longevity they add to your day.
I’ve been thinking about forgiveness this morning. I wonder if we understand just how much God loves us… It seems that a misunderstanding of this will reflect in the way we treat others. If we understood just how much God...
Hey friends. We had a great time at Free Tulsa last weekend celebrating 10 years of playing together. Thanks so much to everyone who came out and sang out at our hang out. That was the last show we have booked for a bit. Surely we’ll see you all soon enough though. We’ve got a few things in the works. Until next time we’ll probably be working on new music and messing with...

Back in the day...
July 28, 2001: We played our first show with Craig on drums at the Mustard Tree in Claremore with the Gadabouts. At the time, we were called At All Costs, and we played our own technical, free-wheeling brand of pop-punk (“new-school punk,” as we called it). We followed our normal set with a cover set, during which we played most of the songs from Zao’s album Where Blood and...
Wow! We played the Soundpony “Festival of Dreams” on Saturday. What a good time! So many good friends and good bands. Thanks so much to everyone who came out at 12:30 p.m. to see us! You guys helped us do it up right.
We have a couple more shows coming up this month. We’re playing on the 22nd at Joe Mama’s Pizza and either the 29th or the 30th somewhere at the Free Tulsa...

Christian Music? Food for thought...
We were called a “Christian Band” in a recent article, and it got me thinking a little. I suppose it is a fair title for us. We are Christians, therefore, we do all things for God’s glory. Every activity, every word spoken, every relationship, should be one in honor of Christ. But I was thinking about that title “Christian band”. There is a whole music industry built...

The star of this video is our very good friend Kyle Hansen. Kevin and I grew up down the street from him, and he’s been just like our brother for pretty much our entire lives. These days, Kyle lives in Arkansas and does amazing work with an awesome skate ministry called Self Destruct. Check them out, and check out the video above, won’t you? Hope you enjoy it!
Peace, Chris

Activity!
It seems like we here at Scales of Motion HQ go through brief, yet fairly frequent, periods of hibernation, especially lately. Craig went to Seattle on business for a few months at the end of 2010; Kevin and his wife Adrienne have taken a couple of trips to volunteer at a camp called Horn Creek in Colorado over the last several months; and I (Chris) got married to the love of my life, Penni,...

We released Nocturnes yesterday on our Bandcamp! The shipment of CDs came in last week from the manufacturers, and they look amazing! Thank you all so much for your continued support and encouragement, for all your prayers and kind words, and for your patience with us while we worked to complete this album. It’s been the longest and most exhausting process we’ve gone through as a...

News news news!!!
Hey, friends!
2011 is off to a great start! We made our first appearance on Z104.5 The Edge’s “Homegroan” a couple weeks back, where we debuted some songs from the new album. This past Thursday, we played our first real show in 5 or 6 months! PHEW! It felt amazing, and you all are amazing for coming out and supporting us!
Now for the biggest news: Nocturnes, the album on...
Success
I was thinking about whether Scales is a successful band or not, and it got me thinking about how we, as the church, define success. When I hear the word success, I automatically think of money and popularity. Anyone who is “successful” in life has cash and comfort and ease of life, and is perhaps popular and well-liked. But if we read scripture and still have that idea of success, we...
distractions of less...
Some friends of ours used to be in a band called Distractions of Less. Awesome friends and awesome band. I’m not sure exactly what the name meant, but it got me thinking today about all the things in my life that distract me from the life I should be living.
I’ve got a new house, with a brand new kitchen, brand new appliances, brand new cabinets, super nice I think. Yes, the old...

Hey, friends! We’re having a sale on our BandCamp from now through January 31st. Turns out releasing one’s magnum opus is a little more pricey than expected. So think of this as a “Help Scales Sale.” You know how we are, though; we don’t like to take money without giving you a little something in return! So here are the deals, outlined in painstaking detail...

hallelujah
Despite the way I continue to fail Him, He forgives me and longs for me and welcomes me back. Despite the deadly paths I choose and deathly choices I make, He continues to lead me and continues to breathe life back into me. Despite the way I ignore Him, the way I try to do things behind His back, the way I won’t listen to Him, He continues to work in me. Despite the way I treat Him, the way...

So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
“ The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent...

friends
We may have never succeeded in defining our “sound” or making a name for ourselves over the years, but if our music is anything special to you, I hope it’s because you see how special it is to us. We love nothing more than to make music, let our hearts speak through it, and play it for our friends. Friendship is the single greatest thing music has done for us. I can’t count how many awesome...

Lyrics (and why our new album is not finished yet)
Writing lyrics is a lot of work, because inspiration doesn’t come easy. I can’t choose what I’m writing about; I have to let life dictate that. I have to embrace myself at my deepest and often my darkest. I have to let my words be a vehicle for the things that are crying out inside of me, my struggles and triumphs, my worries and joys, my fears and my faith. That’s a...
Nooz!
Hey, friends! Sorry for the lack of blogging lately. We’ve been busy working on a few different things, and while I can’t tell you exactly what one of those things is yet, I can give you a vague description. (Ahem) Over the past week, we’ve been working on a little home recording project, a brief EP made up of new versions of old songs and one brand new song, that will see the...

Tulsa Music: 2010
If you’re a fan of music living in Tulsa these days, you know you’re experiencing an age of abundance. The things going on in this city right now are making all of us giddy! Great bands/artists of widely varying styles (Snorlaxx, Lizard Police, Algebra, Concussion Waltz, John Moreland, the Harvard Meats, Bearhug, the Red Alert, And There Stand Empires, to name a few); great, unique...

What's so cool about cool?
I remember it. 6th grade. I needed the clothes. I needed those brand names. It was vital to my survival as a 6th grader. Then, somewhere along the way I realized that brand name clothing and “coolness” would never give me the acceptance I was looking for. True friendship, true Love does not operate under conditions like that. The love of God is unconditional. And, whether I knew it or...

Love, for the Day is Near
8”Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. 9The commandments, “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” “Do not covet,”and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: “Love your neighbor as...

Love...
I talk a lot about love, because I believe in Love with all of my heart. But don’t mistake my belief for expertise. I am not perfect at loving everyone all the time. In fact, I probably fail more often than not. As the C.S. Lewis quote Kevin posted in the last entry states, true love is hard, gut-wrenching work, and no matter how hard I might try, I cannot perfect it. Sometimes I feel...
“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it...
Worship
God has been giving us many opportunities to lead worship lately. After playing shows for over 10 years of our lives, leading worship is quite an awkward thing. It’s very, very different. The idea is not to perform, or to even be noticed at all, but to facilitate worship; or provide an environment in which people can worship. While Scales music or what we do at shows is not about us, but all...

dreams and small things...
I might ramble a bit tonight. I always dream. I dream of being some crazy traveling guy who has all these awesome adventures. I dream of being part of a well planned, active, successful missional community, living like Christ and serving the local needy. I dream of being in a well known band who writes awesome music and tours the nation and makes a difference in someone’s life. I dream of...

Also, thanks so much to everyone who came out to the show at the...

honesty
Honesty. There’s something so freeing about being completely real with someone. In being completely honest with Adrienne, Ive found that I carry no weight with me. Its a beautiful thing. Somehow, because I can be real with her, I feel like I can be real with everyone. I hope we can all be real with each other. Have a great Tuesday friends.
